With little more than a teaser image, Lexus has announced that it will take the covers off an all-new concept model at next month’s North American International Auto Show.

The solitary image shows the mystery model’s lower front left-hand side, with a snippet of headlamp, air intake, grille and tyre the only discernible features.

The sporty-looking model will showcase a new design direction, Lexus says, possibly an extense of the L-finesse design language shown on the recently launched GS. Entirely American in origin, the concept comes directly from the manufacturer’s Calty design studio in Newport Beach, California.

Little is known of the car’s technical character, with even the dimensions a closely guarded secret. But some insiders have suggested the model will go toe-to-toe with at least one new offering from Acura, which we assume to be the upcoming NSX (sportscar), ILX (sedan) or RDX (crossover).

Lexus will unveil the concept model in Detroit on January 9.
